Rhythm Bands serve as the “engine room” of J’Ouvert’s sonic landscape. The engine room supports the steel band with timelines that help drive the rhythm forward. Engine room instruments are an important contributor to the orchestra’s sound that often includes: drum set; congas; güiro (called ‘scratcher); claves (called ‘toctoc’); cowbell; and brake drums (called ‘irons’). Learn about this interplay with a Steelband workshop featuring Brooklyn Steel Orchestra.

This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
