Adult Arts and Crafts: Indigo Dyeing
arts and crafts
Branches in Bloom
climate and the environment
fiber arts
gardening
Join Flatbush Library for an afternoon of indigo dyeing in our back garden. We'll walk participants through the process and required materials and discuss various resist techniques, including twisting and blocking. Attendees will have the chance to dye two pieces during the class time. If time, we'll also experiment with natural indigo leaves from the garden.
We will have some cotton t-shirts available but recommend everyone bring at least one small item to dye (shirt, hand towel, totebag, etc.). Please bring something made of natural fiber only. PRE-WASHED Silk, Cotton, and Linen are best! Manufactured cellulose fabrics like modal, tencel, and rayon are okay too. Indigo will not bond with synthetic fibers or blends. This is a great way to bring new life to a stained or much-loved garment or other fabric. Please wear clothes you don't mind getting a little messy.
Weather permitting.
