Adult Arts and Crafts: Indigo Dyeing
arts and crafts
Branches in Bloom
climate and the environment
fiber arts
gardening
[Rescheduled to Thursday, September 28th due to rain.]
Join Flatbush Library and the New York Restoration Project for an evening of indigo dyeing in our back garden using indigo we've grown this summer! We'll walk participants through the process and required materials and discuss some simple techniques, including twisting and blocking. Attendees will have the chance to dye at least one piece during the class time.
We will have some cotton t-shirts and silk scarves available but recommend you bring one small item to dye (shirt, hand towel, totebag, etc.). Natural fibers only, including pre-washed silk, cotton, and linen are best! This is a great way to give new life to an old garment. Manufactured cellulose fabrics like modal, tencel, and rayon are okay too. Indigo will not bond with synthetic fibers or blends. Please wear clothes you don't mind getting a little messy.
Weather permitting.
