Dyker Library is excited to host Dr. Qiujing (Lisa) Bu, an exciting TED Talk speaker and published author, in the 4th installment of the Series of Conversations with Chinese Writers in New York. On March 23rd, Dr. Bu will talk about her book Reading for Defiance: How to Use Books to Overcome Life's Challenges (Tsaiwei Publishing House); share her life stories; shed light on the virality of her 2013 TED Talk "How Books Can Open Your Mind," which currently has more than 6.5 million views; and discuss how she managed to change her life through reading and writing. Originally from Hunan with what were considered unrealistic dreams of becoming a Huangmei Opera Singer, Dr. Bu would eventually graduate from Nanjing University with a degree in Chinese Literature. She became a white-collar worker followed by a software engineer—all respectable and expected white-collar jobs according to her community—earning her MBA in Information System and a Ph.D. in Journalism and Communication from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After change and tragedy and with the wonderous power she felt through reading and writing, she restarted her life and career. Now she is a producer/host of the Chinese version of the TED podcast. Although her semi-autobiographical book couldn’t pass censorship in the mainland of China, it was published with welcome attention in Taiwan. Dr. Bu will share her journey of chasing that dream, the magic cultivated from reading and writing, and how she was able to evade an unwanted fate to live her ideal life in New York. Her publisher, Mr. Chihcheng Hu, will also be in attendance to engage in the dialogue. A former teacher of Chinese literature in Taiwan, he now runs the Taipei Tsaiwei Publishing House and has also been publishing an anthology called the Tsaiwei Series. This event will be hosted by Mr. Aiguo Ying, a Chinese writer based on Long Island. Dr. Bu’s book and some books from Tsaiwei Publishing House will be available for purchase.
