Read & Play: Ready for Kindergarten!

Jessica, Coordinator of Early Literacy Programs

There are so many things that young children need to be ready for Kindergarten!

There are also a lot of mixed messages out there for parents and caregivers on what skills to focus on, and the best way to help their children learn them. At Ready Set Kindergarten, BPL’s popular school readiness storytime (10 years and counting), we focus on ways parents can weave early literacy, math, science, and social-emotional skills into their daily routines in ways that are fun and developmentally appropriate. For example, did you know that singing helps children develop phonological awareness, by breaking down and playing with the smaller sounds in words? Non-fiction and informational picture books teach children important background knowledge that builds their vocabulary, and helps later with reading comprehension.

Ready Set Kindergarten introduces five daily practices: Reading, Writing, Singing, Talking and Playing, and models ways parents and caregivers can engage in these practices daily. You can even track your activities using our weekly Early Literacy Calendar or explore one of our many Ready Set Kindergarten booklists! We draw many of our book suggestions and curriculum themes from the Pre-K for All booklists and Scope and Sequence, so that little ones who attend RSK can start to get excited about attending 3-K or Pre-K!

Ready, Set, Kindergarten starts this Friday, Saturday and Sunday! Click here to see which branches offer Ready, Set, Kindergarten. You can also search our events calendar for Ready, Set, Kindergarten programs here.
