To mark both Juneteenth and the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, this June we'll be reading To Free the Captives by Tracy K. Smith. Through this personal manifesto on memory, family, and history, Smith explores how we in America might—together—come to a new view of our shared past. Starting in Sunflower, Alabama, the red-dirt town where Smith’s father’s family comes from, Smith etches a portrait of where we find ourselves four hundred years into the American experiment. Where are we going as a nation? Where have we been?
Join Flatbush Library's monthly book club for a chance to meet your neighbors and dive into some great books. We read a variety of nonfiction and contemporary fiction.
Copies of the book are available to pick up at the library's front desk. All are welcome.
