FOSSS (Free & Open StudioSonic Sciences) is a free music production program, offering workshops and other instruction at Brooklyn Public Library.

This workshop is open to all, and will cover the basics of audio plugins and special effects. Using GarageBand, we will experiment with many free built-in plug-ins, and also look at other effects that are available. From reverb, to phasers, delay to tremolo, choruses, flangers and ring modulators, learn how to spice up your sounds, add new textures to your productions, and have fun exploring all of the possibilities. With demonstrations, listening, and discussions, we will learn how many of these effects work, and creative ways to use them.

This workshop takes place in the Info Commons Lab. Laptops will be provided on a first come first served basis. Bring your own USB-C stick if you would like to save your work.

Carlos Hernandez is a musician, producer and audio engineer from Brooklyn, NY. With over 20 years experience running studio sessions, Carlos has become a go-to producer for NYC underground music, working with artists such as Princess Nokia, Palehound, Juan Wauters, Frankie Cosmos, Rachika Nayar, Nappy Nina, Eartheater, and many more.

His band, Ava Luna, has been described by the New York Times as “...post-soul... pulsating from one energy to another, suggesting art project and ritual.” And his 2022 solo album was described by Pitchfork as “an excellent solo album of minimalist funk and R&B pared down to its barest essence.”
