We Everywhere: Dialogues of the African Diaspora [ECUADOR]
We Everywhere: Dialogues of the African Diaspora is a virtual series showcasing the overlooked voices, stories and histories of the African diaspora. From unexpected American states to countries including Germany, Iran, Ecuador, Israel, Palestine, Turkey and China, we’ll learn about various forms of migration that brought Afro-descendants to myriad places. Through storytelling workshops, film screenings, panel presentations, and explorations of art, music, food and traditions, we’ll explore these rich global communities and their connections to Brooklyn.
This event will center Black life in Ecuador. Panelists will reflect on the history and legacy of Blackness in Ecuador and #blacklivesmatter in an Ecuadorian context. This panel will feature:
- Juana Francis Bone is a black woman, feminist and anti-racist activist, who travels between mixtures of urban and rural realities. Juana faithfully believes in the possibility of making a better society and is a part of the Mujeres de Asfalto Collective as well as the Re-existencia Cimarrunas.
-
Pilar Egüez Guevara, PhD is an Ecuadorian cultural anthropologist, writer and filmmaker, who specializes in food, culture, conflict and health. She is director and producer of Raspando Coco, an award-winning documentary about the culinary and medicinal traditions of Afro-Ecuadorians.
-
María Luisa Hurtado Angulo is an Afro-Ecuadorian woman and activist from Esmeraldas. A life-long educator, she is active in her community and the current president of the Conamunece.
