AAHC Bklyn Incubator music We Everywhere

We Everywhere: Dialogues of the African Diaspora is a virtual series showcasing the overlooked voices, stories and histories of the African diaspora. From unexpected American states to countries including Germany, Iran, Ecuador, Israel, Palestine, Turkey and China, we’ll learn about various forms of migration that brought Afro-descendants to myriad places. Through storytelling workshops, film screenings, panel presentations, and explorations of art, music, food and traditions, we’ll explore these rich global communities and their connections to Brooklyn.

This event will center Black life in Turkey. Panelists will reflect on #BlackLivesMatter in a Turkish context and speak about the history and legacies of slavery, race, Afro-Turks and other Afro-descendent groups living in Turkey. Following the panel, we'll enjoy a virtual music listening session.

Featuring:

  • Méliké Konur is a singer/song writer of Afro-Turk Soul and entertainer based in NYC. She is known and celebrated for her participation and performance in the FOX (Turkey) singing competition "Benimle Soyle."
  • Ayşegül Kayagil is a PhD candidate in Sociology at The New School for Social Research. Her research pertains to race, ethnicity, Turkish nationalism, and the legacy of slavery in the Middle East.
  • Zavier Wingham is a PhD candidate in the joint program for History and Middle East and Islamic Studies at New York University. His research explores how changing Ottoman elite conceptions of race, slavery, and blackness in the Ottoman Empire contributed to new forms of racialization of enslaved and manumitted Africans.

Note: This program is offered through the African American Heritage Center (AAHC), housed at the Macon Library. AAHC programs are open to anyone, and everyone, interested in celebrating, exploring, and discussing the African Diaspora. If you have questions please contact Sheena Daree Miller at s5miller@bklynlibrary.org.

This AAHC virtual program will take place via Zoom. For optimal participation, you will need either a computer with audio and webcam or a telephone. A link and number to access the meeting will be sent to registrants one hour before the meeting, so please keep an eye out for the email; check your spam folder if you don't see it.
