“Urban Skins & Ancient Kin” is an exhibition of lyrical, dynamic abstract photo-based paintings by Brooklyn based Plains Cree/Anishnawbe/Metis artist Bebonkwe Brown.  Bebonkwe's artworks continue First Nations traditional creative practices and land-based relationships within cutting edge technological and contemporary arts modalities.

The pieces in the exhibition are composed of images of layered, expressionistic surfaces of the city, aka the 'urban skin', acknowledged, found, framed and photographed through an Indigenous, female gaze, then reconfigured to become and/or be adorned with pan-tribal geometries or physical materials with cultural significance. These elements are collected from the streets of NYC, using a traditional approach and/or gathering practices, then incorporated into artworks through various methods of ‘decolonizing’ Western tech media, materials and practices

Join us for the opening reception from 5:30pm - 7:30 pm with an artist introduction to the exhibition at 6pm.  The exhibition will be on view at the Brooklyn Heights Library from December 11th, 2023 to May 18, 2024.
