University Open Air: That Obscure Object of Desire

BPL Presents humanities and art social sciences University Open Air

19th-century romantic French literature shows us the contradictions that still nourish pop culture today. Stereotypical heroes both idealistic and opportunistic, passionate, and timid pursue women divided into the virginal and sensual and preferably married. We’ll try to understand what these works tell us about desire, society, and even censorship.

Nadia Bongo holds a Ph.D. in French Language and Literature from Aix Marseille Université. She taught French Language, Literature, and Research for the French Academy for six years. She feels fortunate to have two passions: teaching and writing. She attended a Cave Canem workshop (2018) and is a Brooklyn Poets fellow (Spring 2021). She is working on a poetry collection. Her work has appeared in the NYPL zine and Newtown Literary.

*In cases of rain, classes will be canceled. Registered patrons will be notified by email on the morning of each course day and are also encouraged to check the UOA webpage and BPL Presents’ Facebook and Twitter pages for updates.
