BPL Presents science and math University Open Air

**Please note: Due to the forecast of rain throughout the day, today’s (Thursday, September 9) University Open Air classes have been cancelled. We will notify registered patrons if we’re able to reschedule these classes for another day.

In this course, we are going to discuss why venoms are studied, what they are made of and how they induce toxic effects in the inoculated victims. General aspects related to the treatment of the victims are going to be presented as well. We are also going to explore how toxins present in the venoms can be useful to treat other pathologies and how they can be explored for biotechnological purposes. Join us for an outgoing discussion about why this science is relevant and how it impacts our lives.

Fernando Matsubara is a researcher and university professor who relocated to New York City in 2019. He received his BA in Biology from the State University of Londrina, Brazil. As a university professor, he worked at the Federal University of Paraná and Universidade Positivo. He is an expert on the molecular biology of animal venoms, with a special focus on the identification and characterization of venom toxins and their therapeutic and biotechnological applications.

*In cases of rain, classes will be canceled. Registered patrons will be notified by email on the morning of each course day and are also encouraged to check the UOA webpage and BPL Presents’ Facebook and Twitter pages for updates.
