BPL Outdoors BPL Presents humanities and art University Open Air

In this class, students will read original and translated poems by contemporary Taiwanese authors. Pairing individual poems with American poets, students will use thematic concepts as a guide to generate new work; elements include intimacy, magic, suppression, sarcasm, lost in translation, and more, to be discussed by juxtaposition. We'll first read a few poems together, followed by writing prompts.

Chia-Lun Chang is the author of Prescribee (2022), winner of the Nightboat Poetry Prize, named among the “Best Poetry of the Last Year” by Ms. magazine, and honored as a Poets & Writers debut poet and two chapbooks; An Alien Well-Tamed and One Day We Become Whites. Recent work appears in Academy of American Poets, GrantaBombColumbia Journal and Brooklyn Rail. She has received support from the Jerome Foundation, Vermont Studio Center, Tofte Lake Center, Poets House and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, which awarded her the 2022 Sarah Verdone Writing Award. Born and raised in New Taipei City, Taiwan, she lives in Brooklyn.

*In cases of rain, classes will be either moved to the Prospect Park Boathouse or canceled. Registered patrons will be notified by email on the morning of each course day and are also encouraged to check the UOA webpage and BPL Presents’ Facebook and Twitter pages for updates.

University Open Air is generously supported by The Morris & Alma Schapiro Fund. WNYC is a media partner of the 2020 BPL Presents Season.
