Stargazing! @ Park Slope Library!
Would you like to learn more about the stars and planets? Want to see what we can see in the night sky?
Join the Park Slope Library for an evening of astronomy and stargazing from our garden.
We’ll learn how to find objects and identify them in the night sky.
Curious for more?
Follow up nest week, and join us BEFORE the stargazing for another of our monthly "Science in the House" videoconvos.
Science in the House! Meet an Astrophysicist
Meet Nathan Whitehorn, Associate Professor, at Michigan State University.
"I study the universe at its very earliest and most energetic/catastrophic using a pair of instruments at the South Pole (the South Pole Telescope and the IceCube
Neutrino Observatory) "
Nathan will be discussing "The Universe As You Have Not Seen It"
"What don't you see when you look at the night sky? Starting from what
you see with your eyes looking up at the sky, I will talk about things you might not have thought about (why is the sky black?) and what else
is in the sky that you cannot see, from the Big Bang to stellar explosions."
My research studies the Universe at its youngest and brightest, using
both radio waves and particles called neutrinos, from observatories
located a 10-minute walk from the South Pole. The goal is to understand
what makes up the universe and the nature of the universe's most violent
objects. One of the things that I find most exciting about this work is
that it is immediate from day-to-day life: you can learn about the Big
Bang from looking at the night sky with unaided eyes on a city street
and see the nuclear debris from stellar explosions on a kitchen counter
with materials from a drug store; fancier versions of these same
techniques now drive our understanding of the distant and bright universe"
This is a virtual meeting from 4:00PM to 5:00 PM. Please register if you'd like to particiapte in this part of the program.
Afterwards, we will head out to the garden for an evening of stargazing, until 7:30 PM.
Drop in anytime to take a look through our telescope to see what we can see!
Have more questions? Post them on our virtual bulletin board!
NOTE: Registration is encouraged but not required. However, to join the Zoom, you will need to register.
We will also notify registrants by email if we have to cancel the program.
