A Meaningful Relationship with the History of Art: Kerry James Marshall
The Info Commons presents Inside Art: Talks with Artists & Art Educators about Contemporary & Modern Art
Artist Kerry James Marshall has been engaged in a lifelong study of the methods and concepts that underly the creation of great works of art. Since his earliest explorations of museum collections and art historical texts, he has developed an understanding of the criteria applied in the selection of those works while questioning why some art of equal quality has been excluded.
Marshall has dedicated his work to depicting the African American experience informed by keen observation of not only fine arts, but other visual media and how they influence culture. The synthesis of these objectives has resulted in a celebrated body of work that has secured its place in the history of art.
Through this talk, led by Pamela Ford, we will explore Marshall's work framed by his unique vision of art history.
This workshop will take place online via Zoom. Please RSVP to receive the Zoom link prior to the event.
Pamela Ford's professional experience includes Director of Education at The Studio Museum of Harlem, and Program Director for the Romare Bearden Foundation.
Among her responsibilities as Program Director at the Romare Bearden Foundation, Ms. Ford oversaw the development of a biannual symposium series based on the aspects of the artist's work, including Romare Bearden and the Modernist Tradition, the national traveling exhibition From Process to Print: Graphic Works by Romare Bearden, and a comprehensive Bearden curriculum, Romare Bearden in the Classroom, which was presented through a series of educators' workshops around the United States.
Ms. Ford has lived in the Grand Army neighborhood of Brooklyn for over 30 years.
During the long months of quarantine, many of us found ourselves missing art: the deep encounters that surprise and move us, helping us to understand the world (or reevaluate what we think we know about it). Virtual encounters with art, while not the same as face-to-face, allow us access to art with tour guides — artists, art educators, and institutional directors who can guide us to new understandings of iconic art or introduce us to art we have never seen before. The Info Commons presents Inside Art: Talks with Artists & Art Educators about Contemporary & Modern Art, a monthly series, to take a deep dive into some NYC exhibits, to (re)examine some dominant narratives of modern art, and to explore the practice of working artists in their own words. We hope you’ll join us online.
