"As I See It (Anyone Can Cook)" Opening Reception
“As I See It (Anyone Can Cook)” is a collection of photos whose common theme is only the Artist's POV. Taken between 1979 and present day, the photos capture NYC (one from Pa.) through the eyes of a college student, dad, DUMBO resident, and frequent pedestrian. The photos exhibited here were chosen because they offer images from an uncommon perspective.
Growing up reading Life magazine and National Geographic made me excited about photography. In these publications, I found artists who could create photographs that looked to me to be more than the sum of their parts. Attending school to study Biology meant I could only take a few classes in photography. With limited instruction, it was easy for me to not over think what I was doing. I just took pictures and tried to learn from mistakes.
In a world that increasingly tries to criticize artists and their art, I believe we should all take a page from Chef Gusteau’s book, “Anyone Can Cook”, in the movie, “Ratatouille”, and cook whatever we would like to cook. So, go do Art.
About the Artist: Nick DeSantis
Nick is a long time resident (18+ years) of DUMBO, who has been taking photos since high school and never expected to have an exhibition. He has always been attracted to color (shoutout to Kodachrome 64), but the works of Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange reminded him of the power of black & white images. If his photos say anything, they say try to look at the world from a different perspective because you too can create art – in any form.
This program is generously sponsored by the Friends of Adams Street Library.
