BPL Presents Solar Eclipse

Casey Benjamin (October 10, 1978 – March 30, 2024) was a genius producer, musician, and artist. Born in Brooklyn, NY, and raised in Jamaica, Queens NY, he was a pioneer of his unique brand of saxophone, aerophone, and vocoder. Casey constantly pushed past the limits of music and genre. Originally a jazz saxophonist, he evolved to develop a sound that was wholly unique. From sonic contributions to his stylish aesthetic, Casey was in a class of his own. He was an industry veteran who collaborated with numerous music greats, across jazz, hip-hop, R&B, and more. He co-led the funk-forward combo HEAVy with singer/songwriter Nicky Guiland and was a pivotal force in two acclaimed bands: Blackout, led by Stefon Harris; and the Robert Glasper Experiment, with whom he won two Grammy awards. His family has stated: “Casey stayed true to the art of his music, and the energy of his spirit will live on in eternity.”

On Monday, April 8, from 2:30-3:30 pm, as a cosmic offering to Casey Benjamin during the Solar Eclipse, musician Vernon Reid will conduct members of Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber and special guests on the plaza of the Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Library branch in a community-based program to lift Casey’s name into eternity. This event is organized in partnership with the Benjamin family.

PLEASE NOTE: Cantral Library has run out of eclipse glasses. Eclipse glasses will not be available.
