Linda Davison Mathues is an accomplished and award winning artist, with a studio in East Quogue, NY.  She attributes her glowing work in color abstractions to the great Impressionists and Post Impressionists, Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin and Pierre Bonnard. A passion for color is a common thread that runs through all her creations in oil, watercolor and pastels. It’s the scintillation and vibration between colors she finds most exciting. The artist earned a BS degree in Art Ed from Nazareth College, with continued studies at The Cape Cod School of Art.  Linda is an avid Plein Air painter and her portfolio includes work from Provence France, the Greek Isles, Ghost Ranch, NM, Hawaii, the American Southwest and the New England Coast.

La Paloma Fine Art Gallery in Superior AZ is currently exhibiting Linda’s work.  In September 2019 she exhibited fifty-six paintings and presented an Art Talk at The Hampton Bays Library.  Linda was juried into the 2020 Pastel Society of Maine’s International Exhibit and the 2018 Arizona Pastel Artists Association's National Exhibit in Sedona, AZ and won two merchandise awards.  That year she also took a Second Place award at The Berlin Maryland Annual Plein Air event.  Linda received an Honorable Mention at Patchogue Arts Council’s 2019  Annual Plein Air event and a Second Place ribbon in the Quick Draw.  Several of her paintings are included in artist Lois Griffel's instructional book "Painting Impressionist Color: Any Style, Any Medium".  You may see Linda painting locally with the Plein Air Limner Society (PALS), celebrating the beauty of Long Island.  Linda conducts classes, demos, workshops and loves sharing her expertise.  She also does painting party events at The Reboli Center for Art & History in Stonybrook,NY.  These events raise funds to honor and continue the legacy of artist Joe Reboli, one of Long Island’s most important and beloved artists.

Artists Statement

I have always been making art.  My earliest memories are hours spent drawing and coloring with Crayolas.  A really exceptional High School art teacher set my artistic sails.  I received a degree in Art but I credit later studies with a few influential art instructors for my current style.  A workshop in the 1990's with painter Lois Griffel, (Author of "Painting The Impressionist Landscape'" at The Cape Cod School of Art forever changed me.  Lois studied under painter Henry Hensche who himself studied with Charles Hawthorne.  Receiving the wisdom and power of this great lineage launched an intensive and never ending study of the effects and interactions of colors.  A new way to "see", observe and interpret color resonated in my heart and mind.  Josef Albers' book "Interaction of Color" explained to me what I was already doing intuitively.  I am a life long student and I seek out the best of the best to study with; Charles Movalli, Charles Sovek, David Lussier, Jeanne Rosier Smith, Rosalie Nadeau, Richard McKinley, Sally Strand, and Howard Rose among others.

A passion for color is the thread that runs through most of what I do.  Oil, watercolor and pastel are my main mediums.  Lately I've been toning canvases pink or orange so there is a warmth and glow to oil paintings.  Beginning pastel paintings with a watercolor underpainting is another exciting adventure.  I've even pulled out some old "failed" watercolors to work over.  I am fixated on the deep tones of Colorfix pastel papers' terra cotta, burnt umber and aubergine.  Pastels sing with scintillation and vibration on that paper.

I enjoy the joys and challenges of painting "au plein air" and go outside as often as I can.  Every year I do several "Wet Paint" fundraising events.  I am always happy to say "Yes" when asked to use my time and talents for causes I believe in.
