Celebrating Clarice Lispector's The Chandelier
A panel of writers joins in celebration of legendary Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector and her second novel, The Chandelier, to be published for the first time in English this spring. Co-presented with New Directions. With John Freeman, Porochista Khakpour and Idra Novey; and moderated by Elliott Holt.
John Freeman was the editor of Granta until 2013. His books include How to Read a Novelist, Tales of Two Cities, and Tales of Two Americas. Maps, his debut collection of poems, is out from Copper Canyon in fall 2017. He is the executive editor at Literary Hub and teaches at the New School and New York University. His work has appeared in the New Yorker and the Paris Review and has been translated into twenty languages.
Elliott Holt is the author of the novel You Are One of Them, which was a New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice and a finalist for the NBCC's John Leonard Award for a first book. Her essays and short fiction have appeared in the New York Times, Time, Slate, Virginia Quarterly Review, and elsewhere, and she is the recipient of a Pushcart Prize as well as fellowships from Yaddo and the MacDowell Colony.
Porochista Khakpour’s newest book is the forthcoming Sick, which Kirkus Review praised as “lucid, eloquent, and unflinchingly honest, Khakpour’s book is not just about a woman’s relationship to illness, but also a remarkably trenchant reflection on personal and human frailty.: Her debut novel Sons and Other Flammable Objects was a New York Times Editor’s Choice, one of the Chicago Tribune’s Fall’s Best, and the 2007 California Book Award winner in the “First Fiction” category. Her second novel The Last Illusion was a 2014 "Best Book of the Year" according to NPR, Kirkus, Buzzfeed, Popmatters, Electric Literature, and many more. Among her many fellowships is a National Endowment for the Arts award. Her nonfiction has appeared in many sections of The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Elle, Slate, Salon, and Bookforum, among many others. Currently, she is guest faculty at VCFA and Stonecoast's MFA programs as well as Contributing Editor at The Evergreen Review. Born in Tehran and raised in the Los Angeles area, she lives in New York City’s Harlem.
Idra Novey is the author of the forthcoming novel Those Who Knew (Viking, 2018) and Ways to Disappear, winner of the 2016 Brooklyn Public Library Prize for Fiction. She has translated numerous authors from Spanish and Portuguese, most recently Clarice Lispector.
