Celebrate the inaugural International Lou Reed Tai Chi Day with Meditation and Tai Chi Demonstrations

Sat, Aug 3 2019
4:30 am – 7:00 am
Central Library, Grand Lobby

BPL Presents

Late Brooklyn-born musician Lou Reed studied Tai chi for 30 years and was a passionate advocate for the practice to promote mental and physical well-being. Ren Guang Yi, Reed's teacher for 12 years, and other teachers from different disciplines will lead a morning meditation in Central Library's Grand Lobby followed by demonstrations and classes that represent many forms of Tai Chi. No experience is necessary to participate, in keeping with Reed's belief that everyone can benefit from the Chinese martial art. In the week leading up to the event, patrons can also view Reed's library of Tai Chi books and some of his weapons.

Doors open at 8 am. Guided meditation from 8:30 - 8:50 am.  Please bring your own meditation pillow or mat. A limited number of chairs will be available.

At 9 am, patrons will gather on Central Library Plaza for demonstrations and classes.

The Lou Reed Tai Chi Day celebration continues in the evening at the Prospect Park bandshell as part of Celebrate Brooklyn with a demonstration by Master Ren, accompanied by a live performance of Reed's drone music, followed by a screening of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.
