A look at the Big Apple from 1980 to today, it triggers memories for those who were there, and opens the eyes of those who were not. Koch, Dinkins, Giuliani, Bloomberg, de Blasio. CBGB, NYPD, stop and frisk, flatten the curve. Dyja was there, and so was novelist Meg Wolitzer. These two friends and eye-witnesses discuss NYC’s ever-morphing soul as it stands on the precipice of change yet again.

Thomas Dyja worked in publishing for more than a decade before becoming a writer. Along with editing four anthologies, he’s written three novels and a biography of civil rights pioneer Walter White. His last book, The Third Coast: When Chicago Built the American Dream, was a New York Times Notable book, One Book One Chicago selection, and winner of the 2013 Heartland Prize for Non-fiction. A Chicago native, he now lives on New York City’s Upper West Side.
Meg Wolitzer is The New York Times bestselling author of The Female Persuasion, The Interestings, The Uncoupling, The Ten-Year Nap, The Position, and The Wife, which was made into the film starring Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce. She was the guest editor of The Best American Short Stories 2017, and lives in New York City.
