Baldwin and Beyond: The Enduring Significance of Sedat Pakay's Photographs (ASL)
Room: Languages & Literature, 1st Floor
Best known for the photographs of James Baldwin that are the subject of the Brooklyn Public Library’s current exhibition, Sedat Pakay took many other images that have been rarely seen or not at all. Following a discussion of the vital significance of the Baldwin portfolio, a selection of these other photographs will be presented for the first time together with a discussion of their lasting pertinence.
Donald Spanel served as the consultant to the current exhibition “Turkey Saved My Life—Baldwin in Istanbul, 1961–1971” at the Brooklyn Public Library. He is the archivist of Sedat Pakay’s photographic materials. A former Egyptologist, he received his PhD from the University of Toronto. Dr. Spanel was a friend of Sedat Pakay’s and received his approval to write a book about his photography, which is nearing completion. An excerpt was published as “Sedat Pakay’s Photographs of James Baldwin in Istanbul,” in the James Baldwin Review 19 (2024): 276–96.
