Author Talk and Discussion: "Happiness Is A Choice You Make" by John Leland
Join the library's Services for Older Adults Department in conversation with New York Times reporter John Leland as he shares what he learned from spending a year among six New Yorkers ages 85 and up. The 85+ set represents the fastest growing age group in the country, numbering nearly six million. Leland’s experience was the basis for a long-running series in the Sunday Times, and were collected in his New York Times bestselling book "Happiness Is A Choice You Make: Lessons From a Year Among the Oldest Old."
Mr. Leland will discuss with us how his experience upends contemporary notions of aging, revealing the late stages of life as unexpectedly rich and the elderly as incomparably wise. He will provide updates since the book's publication and also help us answer, 'As we grow older, do we ourselves wield the ultimate control over our own lives and our own happiness ?'
John Leland has been a journalist for The New York Times since 2000, was editor in chief of Details magazine, was a senior editor at Newsweek, and was an editor and columnist at Spin magazine. He has won two awards from the National Association of Black Journalists.
