NoteOn verso: American Museum of Public Recreation stamp. On verso: "Patented by I. N. Forrester of Camden, New Jersey, 1883. Instead of the usual oscillating swing operated by exertion of the persons occupying the seats, this inventor provides a power mechanism. The swings are suspended from an overhead shaft which receives an oscillating motion by a system of gearing operated by power. The oscillating shaft has friction wheels with bands, pulling alternately on a cord by the occupants of the seats; the swing is set in motion withour exertion. In operation it was found that certain passangers would cleverly manipulate the cord in the attempt to swing completely over the top; the inventor forstalled this dangerous practice by provideing [sic] brakebands with limit stops, allowing the seats to swing only to a certain height." Title from typed label on verso.
