  • TitleBrooklyn Navy Yard daguerrotype
  • SummaryCaption: "Rear Admiral E. H. C. Leutze, U. S. N., retired, has presented to Secretary of the Navy Daniels a daguerrotype of the first drydock built in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The picture ... shows the dock while in process of construction in 1846. The work was supervised by Civil Engineer William Jarvis McAlpin, father-in-law of Admiral Leutze. An interesting feature of the daguerrotype is the picture of a man in frock coat and silk hat, making an inspection for the naval secretary of those days."
