What are Articles & Databases?

BPL subscribes to dozens of online databases. These databases contain information from trusted sources, including encyclopedias, newspaper and journal articles, research and reference works, and books. Normally, these databases would cost money to access, but if you have an active Brooklyn Public Library card and an internet connection, they're yours FREE.

Download our Introduction to Articles & Databases handout (PDF).

Why not just search Google or Wikipedia?

Although Google and other search engines can connect users with millions of websites through a quick, easy search, they make no guarantees that that those websites are current or accurate. The information they contain is not necessarily from a trusted, authoritative source.

Likewise, Wikipedia and similar websites contain enormous amounts of information. Most of it is reliable. However, Wikipedia pages can contain inaccurate, outdated, and/or biased information.

If you are looking for fast facts, like phone numbers, directions, show times, or sports scores, then using a search engine to find them makes sense. If you are looking for a quick introduction to a topic, Wikipedia can be a great resource. However, if you require reliable information for a homework assignment, research paper, work-related project, or a personal question, we recommend you take advantage of our Articles & Databases. The following chart explains why Articles & Databases can be more useful for research than a Google search:

Search Engines Articles & Databases

Search engines do not evaluate the trustworthiness of the websites that show up in their search results.

Databases search for information from trusted sources, including encyclopedias, journals, and reference works.

Search engines do not retrieve the full-text articles of many journals and encyclopedias.

Databases can access full-text articles from many publications that are not otherwise available online.

Search engines (and the websites they link to) do not always contain citation information, like author and date of publication.

Databases provide citation information.

Search engines do not reliably filter content based on audience or topic.

Databases often specialize in content for a specific audience (e.g., students) or topic (e.g., health).

Unless otherwise noted, all Articles & Databases are accessible from your home computer. All that they require to log on is an active Brooklyn Public Library card barcode and PIN number. If you do not have either, please visit our pages on getting a library card and resetting your PIN number.

What Should I Do If I Cannot Login?

If you have your barcode and PIN numbers but are still having problems logging in, please contact us. We will investigate the issue and report back to you on it.

What If I Have Other Questions About Articles & Databases?

If you are not sure where or how to begin your research, please take advantage of our Book A Librarian, e-mail reference, or Chat Reference services.
