Brooklyn Public Library Celebrates Re-opening of Flatlands Library with Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein

Brooklyn, NY—Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein joined Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) today to celebrate the re-opening of Flatlands Library. A new versatile meeting room was created in the branch, increasing publicly available space by 25 percent.

“We are delighted to be back in Flatlands Library and thank Assemblywoman Weinstein for her commitment and support of this project,” said Linda E. Johnson, President and CEO of Brooklyn Public Library. “With this flexible new space, the possibilities for programs are countless and we look forward to welcoming patrons here for years to come.”

Assemblywoman Weinstein generously provided funding for the project. Children from PS 207 presented the assemblywoman with hand drawn thank you notes.

The new 800-square-foot conference room is flexible, allowing for different applications including, for example seating for 65 persons for a talk or lecture or 35 persons for a group activity session. The new room will have a screen and technology to share videos and other presentations.

“The Brooklyn Public Library system has always played an important role in our communities, providing a space where people could expand their literary horizons,” said Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein. “With these new improvements, the Flatlands Library can now expand its role, becoming a hub for local activities and groups and civic associations needing a place to gather.”

In addition, the previous meeting space—which only accommodated 16 people—has been refreshed and will now serve as a dedicated children’s activity space.

During the closure, BPL provided bookmobile services outside the branch and patrons were welcomed at nearby branches.

BPL is its most significant era of rebuilding in recent memory. Over the next five years, one third of the Library’s branches will be rebuilt or renovated. Across the borough, we are improving neighborhood libraries with projects ranging from small restorations to full-scale renovations.
