University Open Air: Sound Map of Salsa Music in New York Zine Celebration Part II
In their fall 2022 lecture and listening event, Marcelo Arroyave and Adrian Patino aka Adrian is Hungry traveled back in time through Salsa music in New York City, visiting the places and the musicians in the past that gave rise to this music. This Winter 2023, they have gathered their knowledge into, designed and printed a zine, containing a Salsa map centerfold, based on the material from September's lecture. Over two days, we will celebrate this zine with documentary screenings, conversation and more Salsa music.
Part 2: Today we'll watch Decade of Fire, the 2020 documentary that follows the burning of the South Bronx in 1976 and the community's dedication to rebuilding their home while struggling against policies of racism and neglect. This documentary was also a source of material for the history of Salsa lecture and zine. Following the screening, Marcelo will speak with Vivian Vázquez Irizarry, one of the film's directors and producers. Then we'll move up to the great hall for another DJ set by Adrian, this time celebrating this project and the new additions of Salsa music to the BPL vinyl collection.
Marcelo Arroyave is a researcher and counselor with over four years of experience in qualitative and quantitative research, advising, outreach, and 3+ years of experience in post-secondary and K-12 education. He works with economically disadvantaged youth, low-income communities, and immigrants in vulnerable situations through Community Outreach. He has a Bachelors's degree in Sociology and a Master's degree in Urban Anthropology from Rovira and Virgili University in Catalonia.
Adrian Patino aka. Adrian is Hungry has been collecting and sharing vintage afro-rooted music for the past 6 years in New York City. Tropical sounds from Colombia, New York, the Antilles, Venezuela, Peru, Africa, and more with an emphasis on danceable tunes that hit a nostalgia chord that bring you back to dancing at a family party. A traveler and cultural anthropologist at heart, he’s been exploring and rediscovering his cultural identity through music research and curation, creating spaces in his community to bring these sounds into the NYC nightlife.
