BPL Presents BPL Outdoors humanities and art social sciences University Open Air

Note: this program has been cancelled.

Have you ever read a book that you really like, and noticed that it’s a book in translation? Translated literature is a primary way for us to read about other parts of the world—where the stories stand on their own, instead of pushing for cultural representation or introductions. Where can we look for literary translation events and resources in New York City and beyond? What are ways to participate more in the literary conversation that connects various international perspectives?

In this class, we’ll be introducing authors from Asia, Latin America, Africa, and other parts of the world, who have been translated into English––the established ones and the underrepresented ones. We’ll also build a map together: a map of bookstores with books of translation, NYC venues and translation events, collectives to join, and more. This class is a good resource for those who are simply interested in exploring more about translated literature, those who are just getting into becoming a translator, and for literary citizens who simply love to read and take part in literary events!

Jenna Tang is a Taiwanese writer and literary translator based in New York. She translates from Chinese, French, and Spanish. She received her MFA in Fiction Creative Writing from The New School. Her translations or essays are published in Restless Books, Latin American Literature Today, AAWW, Catapult, Mcsweeney's and her upcoming works will be published in the Southwest Review, World Literature Today, and more. She is one of the selected translators for the 2021 ALTA Emerging Translators Mentorship program with a focus on Taiwanese prose. She is currently teaching writing workshops about languages at Catapult. https://www.jennatang.com/

*In cases of rain, classes will be canceled. Registered patrons will be notified by email on the morning of each course day and are also encouraged to check the UOA webpage and BPL Presents’ Facebook and Twitter pages for updates.
