Social movements are collective efforts aimed at changing institutions, shifting public opinion, and/or transforming personal and group behavior. This course discusses the meaning of social movements and the several ways in which social movements can affect the social, political, and cultural landscape. What are the links between social movements and democracy? Do social movements make democracy more participatory?

Nara Roberta Silva earned her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in Sociology from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), Brazil.
