Portrait of Harriet Beecher Stowe

Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) played an important role in the start of the Civil War. In 1851, she started writing a story that appeared in an antislavery newspaper in weekly installments. It was very popular, and in 1852, the story was published as a book called Uncle Tom's Cabin. This book described the suffering of slaves in the South, and aroused much sympathy and anti-slavery sentiment in the North.
