Vanderhoef's Memorandum from Prisoner of War Records
This document records James W. Vanderhoef's status as a prisoner of war. He was a Union officer captured at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. The Union and Confederate Armies kept detailed records about the status of soldiers, and these records were later preserved by the United States National Archives.
