This article from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reports on the living conditions experienced by Union soldiers in a Confederate prison. James W. Vanderhoef, a Union soldier from Brooklyn, spent a year in Libby Prison following his capture at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863.
