Envelope of James W. Vanderhoef letter

James W. Vanderhoef, a soldier in the Union army during the Civil War, wrote many letters to his sister who lived in Williamsburgh, Brooklyn, New York. Williamsburgh was located in what is known as the Eastern District (E. D.), composed of the neighborhoods of Williamsburgh, Bushwick and Greenpoint. Williamsburgh is still a neighborhood in Brooklyn, now spelled Williamsburg. The stamp on the envelope bears the image of George Washington, America's first president.
