boardwalk A pop-up library keeping communities connected.

Conducting outreach has been one of the many practices for libraries to established partnerships and/or relationships with people and organizations all the while promoting the services a neighborhood branch provides. For the East Flatbush library, outreach conducted by staff has been very successful. Several partnerships/relationships between East Flatbush and organizations have been formed as a result of these efforts. Such partnerships include but are not limited to Brookdale Hospital, Flatlands Family Residence, Liberty Day Care and Community Board 17/District 20

The aim of the Pop-Up Library will be to remain a presence in the East Flatbush community by providing library services. Such services will encompass library card sign-ups, borrowing/returning of library materials, holds, promotion of neighboring library programs, leisure reading, resume help, and printing services. The project will takes place on Tuesday and Thursday with hours of operation between 11am-4pm for a duration of 12 months. Brookdale staff, patients, and visitors will have the opportunity to partake in the services available during the aforementioned times. Library In Transit will occupy a room on the main floor of Brookdale Hospital providing visible access for the community. The materials required for the pop-up library will include collapsible shelves which will house an Adult, Young Adult and Juvenile collection, mobile serve w/ wi-fi access, library cards & applications. Technology equipment already purchased and received from Council Women Inez Barron’s office such as laptops and ipads will be available for use by staff and patrons. The collection of books will include East Flatbush existing collection of materials in addition to a special collection that will be ordered exclusively for the project. A wireless printer, router w/ subscription, paper, and ink will be budgeted into the project. Patrons will be granted up to three free pages of printing. Two staff members will be scheduled to facilitate the project during the times available. In addition to materials and staff coverage, we will need transport of the pop-up library materials to Brookdale hospital from where the pop-up library materials will be stored (Crown Heights Branch) for initial set up. Transportation of materials can be arranged between custodial services by requesting it through a work order. Transportation will only be needed to initially set up the pop-up library and then to break down the space.
