How do educators schedule a class visit?
Locate the library closest to your school on our Neighborhood Map. Call and ask to speak with the Children's Librarian if your students are 12 or under, or the Young Adult Librarian if they are teens. Visits must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance. Email email@example.com and tell us the name of your school, grade, and location.
How do educators sign up their students for library cards?
Library cards can be arranged through the branch closest to your school. Contact your local library branch. You can print library card applications and distribute them to your students. For students ages 12 & under, use the Children's Library Card Application. A parent or guardian must sign applications of children ages 12 and under. For teenage students use the Adult & Young Adult Library Card Application. Arrange with the librarian to drop off library card applications at least two weeks before a class visit and we can have cards waiting for your class. Proof of address is not required when cards are issued as part of a class visit.
My Students' parents don't speak English. Do you have library card applications in other languages?
I don't have the time/permission to schedule class visits. Can you visit my school?
Yes! Librarians visit schools as staff availability allows. We offer storytimes for younger classes and give presentations with booktalks and resources for special assignments to older kids and teens. We can also tell students about library programs, volunteer opportunities and other resources for students such as homework helpers and test prep resources. Locate the library closest to your school on our Neighborhood Map. Call and ask to speak with the Children's Librarian if your students are 12 or under, or the Young Adult Librarian if they are teens. Or email firstname.lastname@example.org and tell us the name of your school, grade, and location. School visits must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance.
Can educators bring their students to the Youth Wing at the Central Library?
Yes. We recommend that students get to know the library and librarians nearest their school, and library cards are always arranged through the branch closest to your school. However, if you are interested in scheduling a class visit to the Central Library, call the Youth Wing office at 718-230-2116. Appointments are made at least two weeks in advance and predicated upon staff availability. A maximum or forty (40) people in each group, including chaperones, can be accomodated per visit.
Please notify the Youth Wing office in advance of any group visits, even if special services are not needed. Due to scheduled visits, programming, and heavy use by our general public, the Youth Wing cannot guarantee sufficient space or seating for drop-in groups.
The Youth Wing does not have space for groups to eat lunch or store lunches, bags, or coats.
Does the library have a computer classroom that can be reserved by classes?
The Central Library Youth Wing houses a Tech Loft with 36 computers. The Tech Loft may be reserved for student groups by calling (718) 230-2116 at least two weeks in advance. It is available to all schools within Brooklyn. Students need to have their library cards with them on the day of the visit to log on to computers.

Brooklyn Public Library's colorful Kidsmobile, a children's library on wheels, visits schools, child care centers, Headstart, afterschool programs and community events. Request a Kidsmobile visit to your school.
