Your Favorite Poet's Favorite Poet is a recurring class at Brooklyn Library celebrating poetic lineage.

The class will show how every poet has to start somewhere – and that behind every good writer, is a good reader. Together, we will demystify the idea that poetry is for the select few, and explore the art form through the lens of legacy and community.

Students will read the work of poets recommended by Ross Gay, Vievee Francis, Airea D. Matthews, Mahogany L. Browne, Naomi Shihab Nye, Tongo Eisen-Martin, Gregory Pardlo, Marwa Helal, Joseph Millar, Tyehimba Jess, Hanif Abdurraqib and Ada Limón. In addition to looking at their poems in conversation, students will be given prompts to respond with poems of their own.

The class will be led by writer and human rights professional Emily Sernaker. Emily's work has appeared in Ms. Magazine, The Sun, The San Francisco Chronicle, McSweeney's and more. She is a Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar and a Lincoln City Fellowship recipient.

This free series is open to writers at all levels. Texts and zoom logins will be distributed to registered students. The class will meet for 10 consecutive weeks. Registrants are encouraged to attend all 10 sessions.
