This event will be held at 22 Boerum Pl, Brooklyn,11201.

Please bring your own yoga mat. Doors open at 8:30 am. Class starts at 9 am sharp.

Imagine starting your yoga class with the wise words of your instructor, who calls out a pose or two, and the pose is followed by a live poem read by a Brooklyn Book Festival poet. Yoga & Poetry is a new initiative of the Brooklyn Public Library that features yoga instruction paired with the added joy of live poetry. The series will curate major living poets, who will appear onsite to read their work. This combination creates an atmosphere of wakefulness that makes yoga and poetry the quintessential way to do both. During less rigorous poses, each of three or four poets are called to read their work on a particular theme which the session will be curated around.

Poets featured on the 18th are Yusef Komunyakaa (pictured center) and Cynthia Cruz (pictured right).

Yoga & Poetry will kick off on Sunday, September 18, at 8:30AM, during the 2016 Brooklyn Book Festival, at ISSUE Project Room with yoga instructor Karen Shelley (pictured left). After the book festival, it will take place monthly at the Central Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library inside the Grand Lobby.
