Celebrating the 200th anniversary of Walt Whitman's birth

Come to Paerdegat Library for a series of eight interactive workshops led by instructor Christine Lipner.

Session 1 - Introduction

A brief biography of Walt Whitman in a changing country. The U.S. was becoming larger. Farms replaced factories. Immigrants arrived to settle in the new territories or work in the North’s new factories. Southern slave owners wanted slavery in the new territories while abolitionists worked to eliminate slavery altogether. Tensions led to the Civil War and freedom for the slaves. Whitman had strong opinions on all these issues, expressed them as a journalist and actively supported them.
