Virtual

anti-racism book club Justice Initiatives

Written in 1993, Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler takes us to 2024 where the ignored enviromental and economic crises of our world have led the United States to the brink of social and political collapse. In California 15 year old Lauren Olamina is living with a dangerous condition called hyper-empathy, which makes her feel the pain of others as if it were her own. Lauren lives in a protected neighborhood, but she knows she will not be safe for long and must take action to survive, build community, and find meaning in this violent and chaotic world.

We will explore themes of race, gender, enviromental devastation, authoritarianism, poverty, trauma, religion and sprituality as we make our way through this rich modern classic of science fiction.

We will meet Monday evenings in March (3/8, 3/15, 3/22, and 3/29) over Zoom. The book can be checked out from the library here: Parable of the Sower

Please register and sign up to receive news about other BPL virtual programming. Registration is limited to 10 participants, with a waiting list.

This is the ninth installment of Justice Initiatives' book club. We'll invite readers to dive into a new title every month, sparking conversations about social power, dismantling oppressive systems, and fostering collective action.
