Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Origami is an art form that was probably invented over one thousand years ago in Japan or China. Since it was invented so long ago, scholars have not been able to say for sure where exactly it came from!

Paper was invented in 105 C.E. in China by a man named Tsai Lun. The way paper is made has not changed much in nearly two thousand years. Plant or fabric fibers are mixed with a lot of water (called a “pulp slurry”), then spread over a screen and drained. The drained fibers are then peeled off the screen and dried.

The earliest known reference to the art of folded paper appears in a poem written by Ihara Saikaku, a Japanese poet. In 1797, Akisato Rito wrote one of the earliest known origami instruction books.
