Body Poetry is an open level class focused on exploring the connections one can make between poetry and the body. Students will be encouraged to read and explicate a piece of poetry or a short piece during class and then create guided choreography with the choreographer. Each student will be exposed to many dance forms such as West African dance, West Indian Dance, Bhangra, Modern, Kathak, Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop and Lyrical.

Friday's classes will feature students from Williamsburg Collegiate Charter School.  However, all students in grades 5 through 8 are welcome to attend if their school schedules allow.

These Dance Lit classes are taught by Janelle "Nellie" Young.  Dance Lit is a community-based residency program for dancemakers to build deeper connections with communities where they create work. Through their programming, grant recipients Janelle Young and Melinda Gonzalez will explore the relationships between literature, language, and dance.

Dance Lit is operated by Spaceworks and El Puente CADRE and is made possible through a partnership with Brooklyn Public Library and is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.
