The Art of Hijab, Kohl Black, and the Right Way to Pray is a new play by Polybe Associate Artistic Director Sarah Badiyah Sakaan and directed by Artistic Director Jessica Brater, explores Muslim feminist identity. Polybe spent two years in residency at LaGuardia Performing Arts Center 2014-2016 developing the play and presented a workshop production in March as part of LPAC's Rough Draft Festival. With a Creative Space grant from ART/NY, we are continuing to investigate what it is like to be a young woman coming to terms with the ideas of feminism, freedom and oppression in Islam and in the United States; engages the stigma of Muslim women who choose to wear Hijab in the western world; and questions the social cultural ideas of beauty norms and gender roles in the United States.
This performance will appeal to high school to senior senior citizens who are interested in cultural assimilation; beauty and styling regimens; and the intersection of faith and feminism. A post-show discussion will follow.
