Kids will build models of housing for enslaved people. Kids will re-create a typical quarter for enslaved people. "Slave quarters, buildings designed and constructed for the express purpose of housing slaves on southern plantations, once existed in the thousands. However, these structures typically were built cheaply of perishable materials, and the large stock of such buildings that stood prior to the Civil War rapidly decayed and disappeared from the landscape once slavery died as an institution" Only a handful remain today. Kids will make reproductions of one of the homes of the great abolitionist Frederick Douglass, and learn about him while they make their models.
