Join us as we honor the finalists of the 2017 Teen Writing Contest and winners of the Ned Vizzini Teen Writing Prize.
The Ned Vizzini Teen Writing Prize, a cash award that is the centerpiece of Brooklyn Public Library's Teen Writing Contest, was launched in 2016. The contest runs during the month of April and students in grades 6-12 can submit poetry and prose for consideration. Winners and finalists have their pieces published in the Teen Writing Journal distributed by the Library.
Ned was not only a tremendously gifted author – one who started writing professionally at age 15 – he was also a dedicated mentor to young writers. Among the advice he gave to aspiring writers was to read widely, write from their hearts, and seek readers to provide feedback. The Prize is made possible by the generosity of Ned's family, friends and fans.
The celebration will feature the winners reading their writing and a panel of authors who will discuss writing. Panelists include:
- Zetta Elliott, author of many books for children and teens, including Bird and A Wish After Midnight
- Jenny Han, author of the All the Boys I've Loved Before trilogy, which includes Always and Forever, Lara Jean
- Daniel José Older, author of Shadowshaper Cypher series
- Ibi Zoboi, author of American Street
The evening will conclude with an author signing and reception.
