Greenpoint Library Presents: Foraging Series for Teens | Fueling Ourselves with the Wild

  Greenpoint, Demonstration Garden

This program is designed specifically for teenagers aged 13+, not for children or their parents. Teens (13+), join us in a foraging series led by Journei Bimwala. From sidewalk cracks to rooftop edges, plants are everywhere. We’ll explore backyard botanicals, street trees, and make a calming dandelion tea together to celebrate the end of the series. Teens, please be prepared and know your allergies well!

This program will be held on our Demonstration Garden, with a rain plan of being held in the Teen Zone (Eco Lab 3).

Journei Bimwala is a Bronx-based Clinical Herbalist, Foraging Practitioner, and educator whose work bridges African ancestral healing, urban ecology, and community wellness. She leads immersive programs that reconnect people—especially youth and families—to the natural world through plant identification, herbal medicine-making, and storytelling rooted in Congolese tradition. As founder of Each One Carry One and co-founder of the nonprofit One Heartbeat, Journei advances food sovereignty, environmental justice, and access to green space in underserved communities. Her work has been featured in The Guardian, The New York Times, and more, honoring plants as both teachers and healers.

This program is made possible through the generous support of the Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund.

E-Waste & Textile Collection Event AND Repair Cafe

  Greenpoint Library

Join us for a day of events promoting the care of the things we own.

Hold on to those electronics and textiles! We will have an e-waste and textile collection event in partnership with the Department of Sanitation, powered by Lower East Side Ecology Center.  Let's recycle the things we own responsibly!

E-waste collected at these events include: household and office electronics (computers, laptops, keyboards, printers), smaller entertainment electronics (video game consoles, cell phones, MP3 players), and TVs, VCRs, DVDs, DVRs.

*Unacceptable items: commercial e-waste, household appliances, air conditioners, batteries, lightbulbs.

Textiles collected at these events include: clothing, shoes, accessories, linens, and all fabric items that are clean, dry, and unsoiled. Textile dropoffs must be in bags!

The event will take place outside of the library on Norman Ave.

Coincing the collection event we will have a Repair Cafe with our community partners Clean Bushwick Initiative where community members may bring items for repair and learn repair skills from their neighbors. This event aims to promote a "repair not replace" mindset, reduce waste, and empower patrons to fix the things they own themselves. More details to come...
