(Brooklyn, NY) March 8, 2010 – Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is pleased to kick off a three-month long fundraising campaign which encourages community involvement and investment in Brooklyn’s public libraries.

During these challenging economic times, more Brooklynites than ever before are using Brooklyn Public Library free resources and programs. BPL is also affected by the difficult economy, and to ensure that the budget crisis does not affect its quality programs and materials, BPL is launching the Support Our Shelves (SOS) campaign starting March 1.

Support Our Shelves is a three-month fundraising campaign in which BPL is appealing to community residents to give back whatever they can to help build their collections in this time of economic uncertainty. Every donation counts, from one dollar to a thousand dollars, and donors can give to their local library or any branch they choose. Each donation helps get closer to the $500,000 goal and provide the materials that our libraries need.

In efforts of helping us to reach this year’s goal, the following corporate/foundation sponsors have pledged their financial support:

Con Edison - Lead Sponsor
Brooklyn Community Foundation
Charles H. Revson Foundation
Durst Organization/New York Water Taxi
TD Bank

As part of this year’s campaign, those wishing to contribute can also do so by making a mobile donation. By simply texting the word “BOOKS” to 50555, BPL supporters near and far can make a $10 donation right from the palms of the hands.

“All the reasons you use your library are all the reasons to give,” said Dionne Mack-Harvin, Executive Director. "Support Our Shelves will help to ensure that your library can continue to provide the free services and materials that you and every Brooklynite need to build a better and richer life. Last year’s SOS campaign was a huge success. Collectively we raised more than $315,000 and purchased more than 27,000 books, DVDs and CDs, the equivalent of five miles between our Central and Kings Highway libraries, or a small library collection."

The Support Our Shelves campaign will run from March 1 through May 31. Donations can be made directly at local libraries, online at or by phone at 718.230.2738.
