Brooklyn Public Library Holds Community Forum on the Highlawn Library Renovation

November 1, 2005

Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) will hold a community forum at 6 PM on Wednesday, November 2 at Highlawn Library located at 1664 West 13th Street near Kings Highway to inform the public of plans to renovate the 6939 square foot building, which was built in 1972.

The $600,000 renovation, expected to take approximately six months, will improve the Library's interior and technology resources. Generously funded by the Brooklyn Borough President and the Mayor of New York City, Highlawn Library's enhancements will include:

New technology:

  • More public computers

  • Wireless Internet access

  • Express Check Machines for library users to independently check out books with Access Brooklyn Card (ABC) – BPL’s multi-function library card

Adding and upgrading public spaces:

  • First Five Years Space – a colorful reading area for children five-years-old and younger, which will feature age-specialized furniture, learning tools, preschooler-friendly computers and a large collection of sturdy board books

  • New furniture in adult and teen reading areas

  • Refurbished shelves, floors and walls

  • New book drops

  • More books and DVDs

The last day of service will be on Saturday, December 10, 2005. While Highlawn Library is closed, service will be provided by a Bookmobile in front of Highlawn Library on Wednesdays from 11 AM – 4 PM beginning Wednesday, December 14, 2005.
