Brooklyn Public Library Announces New Board Members
Brooklyn, NY, April 18, 2008 – This week, the first election of the newly-consolidated board of Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) was held, and Officers were elected to serve in the new term, which begins on April 15, 2008 and lasts through February 24, 2009. The Board of Trustees is BPL's governing board and it consists of 38 members, all serving in non-salaried positions. The Mayor and the Brooklyn Borough President each appoint 11 of the Trustees. Twelve additional members are elected to serve on the Board, and four are Ex-Officio Members.
BPL is pleased to welcome the following newly-elected Officers to its Board:
1) Thomas G. Amon, Chair
Tom was appointed to the BPL Board of Trustees in 2003 by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and has served as Board Chair since 2006. In addition to his role as Brooklyn Public Library Chair, he is an attorney in private practice in New York City. Tom is also a member of the Board of Directors of a number of public and private companies and has lived in Brooklyn Heights with his wife Carol and their three sons for 35 years.
Mr. Amon commented on his appointment:

Under the leadership of Dionne Mack-Harvin and her world-class staff and our many friends and volunteers, BPL leads the nation in innovative service and community outreach. With the continued support of the Mayor and Borough President, our federal, state and local elected officers and our growing donor base, we are well situated to continue to provide excellent service. Our fully-engaged, recently consolidated Board of Trustees is unique amongst not-for-profit organizations – their energy and tireless dedication to this institution is something that amazes and inspires all of us.”
2) Anthony Crowell, Vice Chair
Aside from his position on the Board of BPL, Anthony serves as Counselor to the Mayor, and he also assists in overseeing several City agencies, and sits on a number of City boards and commissions dealing with pensions, procurement, franchises and concessions, libraries and archives, and elections. Prior to his appointment as Counselor, Anthony served as Special Counsel to the Mayor, beginning in January 2002.
3) Miriam E. Katowitz, Treasurer
Prior to being elected Treasurer for the consolidated Board, Miriam was a member of The BPL Foundation Board serving as Treasurer. Miriam is Chief Operating Officer for The Educational Alliance, and before that, she was Chief Financial Officer of Safe Horizon; Chief Financial Officer of the 92nd Street Y and Managing Director for HSBC.
4) Laura Ensler, Treasurer
Laura was appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2003 by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. She is Director of Community Development and Outreach for the Children and Family Services of the Visiting Nurse Service of NY. Laura is also a NYC Commissioner for the Mayor's Commission on Women's Issues, serves on the National Advisory Council of Reading is Fundamental and on the national faculty of the Ounce of Prevention Scale Assessment for Pearson Early Learning.
5) Robert Miller, Member-At-Large
Robert C. Miller is a newly-elected Member-At-Large who also is a partner with the law firm Davidson, Dawson & Clark, LLP. Bob’s community and pro bono activities include Director and Treasurer of the National Endowment for Democracy; Director and member of the Executive Committee of the Foreign Policy Association; membership on the Professional Advisory Boards of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Central Park Conservancy; and President of the Hurford Foundation.
6) Antonia Yuille Williams, Member-At-Large
Toni was appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2005 by Borough President Marty Markowitz. Currently, she is the Director of Public Affairs, Brooklyn/Queens Customer Service of Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc., and prior to that, she was the Director of the Human Resources Administration’s first Voucher Day Care Program.
7) Dr. Lucille Cole Thomas, Immediate Past President
Appointed in 1993 to the Board of Trustees by then Mayor David Dinkins and reappointed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Lucille’s past positions include appointments at the New York City Board of Education as teacher, librarian, supervisor and director, as well as adjunct professor at Pratt, St. John's University, and Queens College.
