Brooklyn Public Library’s Fall Exhibitions Explore Egg Tempera Art, Coney Island Dreams and the Secret Lives of Books

Brooklyn, NY—Brooklyn Public Library opened its fall exhibition season at Central Library with works that explore how art is made and experienced, as well as a surreal and inventive take on a beloved Brooklyn icon.

“Brooklyn Public Library is proud to present a fall exhibition season that features local and internationally renowned artists exploring subjects relevant to the cultural life of the borough,” said BPL president and CEO Linda Johnson.

Kam Mak’s From Oil Paint to Egg Tempera: Portraitures and Still Lifes explores the techniques and methodology of egg tempera, a medium of easel painting widely used in Italy prior to the invention of oil paints in the early 16th century. The works include portraits of the diverse community at the Fashion Institute of Technology, along with traditional still life renderings.

Inspired by Brooklyn’s famous amusement park, Karen Brussat Butler’s Coney Island Dreams Series mixes past and present in dream-like lithographs and paintings.

Jung Eun Park’s Dear Home documents the artist’s obsession with the concept of home, and her relationship with her family, since she moved to New York from Korea. Her drawings (paper, pencil and thread) and yarn-embroidered letters record her intimate life and map the psychological narratives of human beings as they adapt to new environments.

Ten Years of Artists’ Books collects many of curator Donna Seager’s favorite exhibitions from the Seager Gray Gallery’s annual Art of the Book exhibition. The renowned San Francisco Bay Area gallery has long supported the book as a medium for contemporary art.

Gabi Swiatkowska’s The Secret Life of Books celebrates the unique and deeply personal imaginative journeys upon which readers embark under the spell of well-wrought stories. Swiatkowska will also host a children’s art workshop at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 3, at Central Library.

All five fall exhibitions will be on view in Central Library through January 24.
